The most important festival of the year for the city of Venice is coming: the Carnival. Let’s find out more about the history of the mask of Colombina.
Colombina is one of the most ancient masks and probably the only female figure that was able to stand out more in a all-male Commedia dell’arte.
The mask is the result of a long evolution that begins with the character of the Fantesca, and old woman hunched over, whose only task is to bring the letters to her mistress. The Fantesca is the object of a revolution: she gets younger and becomes the first Zagna, the partner of the Zanni, and at the end Colombina.
Colombina is a gracious and seducing servant, in fact she is often the object of Pantaloon’s attentions and so the reason of Harlequin’s jealousy; but she is not just a pretty face: flirty and vain, she has a strong character and she is brilliantly sly.
The costume of Colombina is quite simple: a tight bustier and a flounced skirt. The white apron with pockets where she puts the letters for her mistress cannot miss. She wears a cap on her head or thecrestina, which is the typical handkerchief of the maids. Enjoy the festivity, we are waiting for you!
