On the first days of June, the city of Venice celebrates Festa della Sensa to honour its important connection to the sea.
The Festa della Sensa is one of the most ancient festivities of Venice: it has been celebrated for more than a thousand years on the Ascension Day (which is said sensà in the dialect of Veneto). The festivity wants to commemorate the conquest of Dalmazia by the doge Pietro Orseolo II, a victory that marks the start of the expansion of Veneto in the Adriatic Sea and the end of the piracy.
In 1177 Venice hosted the reconciliation between the Empire and the papacy and the supremacy of the Republic of Venice on the sea was recognized. So the tradition of the Sposalizio del Mare (wedding of the sea) began in the form of a ceremony in the middle of the sea, accompanied by a great procession lead by the doge.
Ristorante Marciana loves the traditions of Venice, so don’t miss the chance to see this spectacular celebration. But first stop at Ristorante Marciana for a good lunch!
